Treatments

My Approach

My approach to treatments integrates Traditional Chinese Acupuncture with Five Element Acupuncture, which can include one or more of the following: acupressure, needling, electro-acupuncture, cupping, gua sha, moxibustion and TuiNa (Chinese bodywork massage). Passionate about gaining a rapport with each person my aim is to truly understand you - and your needs.

Five Element Acupuncture

Five Element Acupuncture treats you, not just your symptoms. I will look not only at the problem you come with, but how it developed – and how you are coping with it. Unless the pain has started with an injury, it can often be part of a larger picture of what is happening in your body, so every treatment plan is individualised.

According to Chinese philosophy, all the universe is manifested in the Five Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. They make up the world in which we live and influence how we function throughout our lives: each element is responsible for the different organs in our body, and different seasons in nature. They also represent a constant cycle of change and growth. Five Element Acupuncture helps to counterbalance effects of stress, restore harmony and balance, through subtle energetic rebalancing to help you navigate a smoother path through life.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture works by extremely fine needles being inserted into specific points (carefully chosen by the practitioner) which then connect to energy (Qi) within pathways of the body known as channels. Energy (qi) flows around our bodies along these pathways. When we are healthy, this flow is smooth and uninterrupted. However, for many reasons including lifestyle and environmental factors, this flow can become blocked, weakened, or disturbed. This can result in pain or illness (mentally, physically, emotionally).

Ear Acupuncture

NADA is a specific branch of Auricular (Ear) Acupuncture. Auricular Acupuncture is just one of the many ancient branches of acupuncture that came originally from China. Rather than needling acupoints on the body, entire treatments can be given by inserting specialist needles into tiny points within the ear. The NADA Protocol uses only the same five ear points at each treatment. NADA is a highly effective treatment of trauma and PTSD, substance or alcohol abuse and effective for stress, anxiety, depression, menopause, ‘burnout’ and insomnia to name but a few. I offer NADA Protocol treatments as a six-week course in a group setting, as well as one to one treatments.

Tuina Massage treatment at Shelley Jones Acupuncture, Coxley

Tuina

Tuina massage is an ancient form of massage that focuses on balancing a person’s energy using various techniques, including kneading, pressing, rolling, and stretching. It massages and realigns your muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Like acupuncture, I stimulate pressure points in your body to influence the flow of qi and blood through the channels, which are energy pathways in the body - as well as working on individual muscles/joints/injuries. I offer in-person Tuina massage as part of an acupuncture treatment or as a stand-alone treatment. This can also be incorporated as part of an online treatment.

Cupping

Cupping is an alternative therapy which involves placing cups on the skin to create suction. This suction improves the flow of energy in the body and facilitates healing – it helps balance yin and yang within the body. Restoring balance is thought to help clear and improve the body’s resistance to pathogens such as a cold, as well as its ability to increase blood flow and reduce pain or muscle ache. Used with suction cups or by a flame to create a vacuum within the cup which is then placed onto the area to be treated; this suction draws the skin upwards and promotes the movement of Qi.

Gua Sha

Gua sha is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves rubbing your skin with a smooth-edged tool to help improve circulation. Gua sha is generally performed on the back, buttocks, arms, and legs. A gentle version of it is used on the face and neck. I start by applying an oil or serum to the area I want to work on, this helps the tool glide across the skin as it moves in an upward or downward motion. The practice breaks up stagnant energy which helps to create a smoother flow of qi.

Moxa

Moxa is a plant extract which is used on specific acupuncture points to stimulate the points and improve the flow of energy in your body. It involves burning moxa, which is a cone or stick made of dried mugwort leaves, on specific acupuncture points along a channel or over joints or scar tissue. The heat helps stimulate these points and improves your body’s flow of qi (energy). Moxa can be used in various forms; moxa stick covers a larger area, moxa cones placed onto needles or directly onto the skin over specific acupuncture points. Where appropriate I can train individuals online how to carry out this treatment at home and can send you a moxa stick to use.

Electroacupuncture

Electroacupuncture is a widely practiced form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Like acupuncture, the needles are placed along a channel or muscle or around a joint. A mild electric current passes between these needles during treatment stimulating the smooth flow of qi. This can be a very effective treatment for pain, musculoskeletal conditions and neuropathy.

Acupressure

Acupressure is a type of massage therapy in which manual pressure is applied to specific points on the body. A practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that is similar to acupuncture, except that it uses pressure instead of needles to stimulate the points. Treatment involves applying pressure to specific acupressure points to restore healthy energy flow. The points chosen depend on your symptoms and can be self-administered, with my guidance.
